Zak Group was commissioned to design and edit CRYPTOPUNKS: FREE TO CLAIM, a mega book that explores the intersection of art, subculture, and technology.

Conceived as a brick of information, it combines essays, interviews, manifestos, blotter art, field reports, Discord threads, and anonymously authored glossary terms with the breakout work of technologists Matt Hall and John Watkinson: 10,000 uniquely generated pixel characters that launched on the Ethereum blockchain in 2017.

Each content type is shown on different papers and through different layout styles. All 10,000 Punks are presented in a special 400+ page catalogue raisonné, documenting each Punks’ Type, Attributes, Pixel colours, and ImageHash. A comprehensive timeline is interspersed throughout the book in a zine-like assemblage of community member posts and tweets as they happened; a glossary defines more than 100 anonymously authored web3 terms and ideas; and a special contribution by the artist Simon Denny presents each Punk in miniature on tear-out blotter paper. A limited edition of the book, exclusively available to CryptoPunks owners, features edge printing with the word “HOLDER.”

Published by Phaidon, FREE TO CLAIM features contributions from figures in tech, design, fashion, finance, and contemporary art including: Hans Ulrich Obrist, Anika Meier, Alexis Ohanian, Mat Dryhurst, Noam Segal, Philippe Bettinelli and Marcella Lista, Michael Connor, Mindy Seu, Chris Lyons, Salome Asega, Shumon Basar, Martina Tiefenthaler, Jack Butcher, Sean Bonner, and 6529, among others.
